After twenty years of studies, research and restoration, the “stone giant” of ancient Akragas has risen again. The “Telamon”, one of the colossal anthropomorphic statues that supported the architrave of the temple of Olympian Zeus, the Olympieion, symbol of the Valley of the Temples, has been brought back to an upright position. The statue, almost 8 meters high, is supported by a 12 meter steel structure to which shelves are anchored where the individual pieces are placed. The entire museum project of the Olympian area, which has so far cost 500 thousand euros of Park funds, includes the upcoming reconstruction on the ground of a part of the entablature and the frame of the temple, in order to make a more concrete idea of the colossal dimensions and uniqueness of the monument but, at the same time, protect the finds. In 2004, the Valley of the Temples Park began an…

2023 was a good year for tourism in the Sicily region. The overall numbers of national and international arrivals recorded 15 million. A result that led the Region to be elected, for last year, queen of Italian tourist destinations. Strengthened by this, Sicily returns to the spaces of the BIT in Milan with a stand of great visual and emotional impact, designed by the internal staff of the Region’s Tourism Department, measuring 1015 m2 characterized by large LED walls and mirrored surfaces: a large marketplace made available to visitors to participate in appointments, meetings and events that will highlight the attractions of a constantly evolving territory, full of stimuli, products and naturalistic wonders that have underlined its success for years. There will be 62 workstations available, occupied by 31 agencies and tour operators, 29 accommodation facilities and 2 restaurants. Present at the stand were the president of the Sicilian Region…

In the nature section you can discover the Etna Natural Park, while in the pages dedicated to culture we could only celebrate Agrigento, which will be Capital of Culture in 2025. Even in our winter issue we could not leave our readers without images of a beautiful beach : this is why we went to Tindari, to make known everything about the legend of the Black Madonna.Erice is the protagonist of the new “villages” section, while for lovers of wine tourism we talk about Nerello Mascalese. An…

Discovering the itinerary included by UNESCO in the list of World Heritage Sites Palermo has an impressive historical and artistic heritage: founded by the Phoenicians and governed, over the centuries, by Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Spaniards and Bourbons, before becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy, each population has left an indelible mark on the city, enriching it artistically and culturally. Today we will focus only on a part of these immense riches, namely the Arab-Norman Route included by UNESCO in the list of World Heritage Sites in 2015. The Arab-Norman Route is the highest expression of cultural syncretism (the union of cultures, religions and arts that seem irreconcilable) that occurred in Palermo in medieval times. There are eight monuments that are part of this route, to which are added, outside the city, the Cathedral and the cloister of Monreale and the Cathedral and cloister of…

Hospitality and mobility at the center of the project that led to the city’s candidacy Agrigento will be the Capital of Culture 2025. The city presented the project entitled “The self, the other and nature. Relations and cultural transformations”, beating the competition of the other 14 cities competing for the competition of the Ministry of Culture. The project, in which, in addition to the city, Lampedusa and the municipalities of the territory are present, explores the harmony and conflicts between the 4 elements of Empedocles (Greek philosopher of the fifth century BC) through 44 projects, 17 of which are international, to investigate the relationships between human beings in a perspective of peace with nature. That Agrigento has become the Capital of Culture is not surprising at all: few cities in Italy and in the world have such a rich history, which starts from Magna Graecia and arrives to the present…

The miraculous birth of one of the most beautiful and famous beaches on the north coast of Sicily A strip of sand that cuts the sea in two, starting from a rocky ridge at the top of which there is a sanctuary that attracts many believers every year. At the foot of the promontory, to further embellish this scenario, there are small lakes that change according to the tides. A unique scenario as only Sicily can offer. We are talking about the beach of Tindari within the Marinello Lakes Reserve. Tindari is a hamlet of Patti and is located in the province of Messina, between Milazzo and Capo d’Orlando. The beach, known as Marinello Olivieri, is one of the most famous in the whole region both for its conformation and for the legends that are handed down about its birth and the sanctuary above it. Looking at it from above,…

Walking in the medieval village nicknamed “the city of a hundred churches” will take you back in time Sicily offers tourists places to travel through time and history, among enchanting landscapes and breathtaking views. Among these places, a place of honor is reserved for Erice, a small medieval village located above the city of Trapani, from which it is connected both by a road and by a cable car which, starting from the provincial capital, takes you to the top of the mountain, showing more and more the panorama of the gulf and the Trapani salt pans. The history of Erice is very ancient: it seems to have been founded in the eighth century BC by the Elymians, the people born from the union of the local populations with the exiles from the city of Troy. Later disputed by the Carthaginians and Syracusans, it became a stronghold of the former,…

We leave for an excursion to the highest active volcano in Europe and its natural park, where opposites come together to create places of incomparable beauty Fire and ice, destruction and life, ash and vegetation… Opposites attract, mix, and unite to create a constantly changing environment that hosts life where everything seems inhospitable. The Etna Park is a place full of charm and mystery, where nature generates as much fear and respect as it does amazement and wonder. Created by decree of the President of the Region on 17 March 1987, the Etna Park was the first natural park to be established in Sicily. An obligatory choice to defend nature which had been under assault since the 60s, when the spread of personal means of transport had seen an important increase in tourism above “a Muntagna” (as Etna is called by the inhabitants of neighboring towns). The natural park includes…

A wine with an international success that was born overlooking the sea from the terraces created on the sides of the volcano Etna, as we could see in the article on its Natural Park, is not only lava and ash but also a great source of life. From the large summit lava deserts we move on to areas where nature dominates unchallenged. In Zone B, which descends from 1880 meters to 640 meters above sea level, agriculture has developed, with terraces created on the sides of the volcano that also host important vineyards. The prince of the vines on Etna is Nerello Mascalese or, in Sicilian, “Niuriddu Mascalisi”. The name “mascalese” derives from the area of origin, that of the Piana di Mascali, which is located on the eastern side of Etna, between the sea and the volcano, while “nerello” is due to the dark and intense color of its…
