The regional government is injecting new life into the island’s economy by approving an additional €20 million. These valuable resources will directly finance investments in tourism facilities throughout Sicily. The decision was made during the latest regional government meeting, which approved a reorganization of the Development and Cohesion Fund, accepting a specific proposal from the Department of Tourism. This strategic move will advance the rankings following last April’s public call for proposals. Initially, the call for proposals capped at €135 million for grants to businesses operating in the hospitality sector.
Governor Renato Schifani expressed great satisfaction with the positive impact this measure will have on the local economy. On the sidelines of the announcement, he emphasized that the original call for proposals had already been extraordinarily successful and that, thanks to this new allocation, it will be possible to meet the demand of many businesses that were initially excluded from funding. The additional resources demonstrate the regional government’s concrete commitment to supporting a sector deemed absolutely vital. The primary objective is to make accommodation facilities increasingly modern, efficient, and capable of meeting the challenges of a demanding and highly competitive market. This is a crucial milestone in a historical period that sees Sicily confirming its position as an extremely attractive destination, with a continuous and steady increase in the flow of visitors from around the world.
The operational management of the entire call for proposals has been entrusted to the company IrfisFinsicilia. The incentives translate into significant non-repayable grants, designed to support a broad and diverse group of beneficiaries. The beneficiaries of the measure include micro, small, medium, and large businesses with operations in Sicily, including hotels, bed and breakfasts, hostels, campsites, tourist villages, vacation homes, shelters, and even aggregated structures such as business networks or cooperatives. Eligible projects encompass a variety of interventions, from renovations and expansions to the reactivation of existing businesses. It is also possible to propose the creation of new hospitality facilities by renovating or converting abandoned properties. The economic value of the granted incentives represents a significant boost for local entrepreneurship, ranging from a minimum of €50,000 to a maximum of €3.5 million for each approved request.
