A fascinating journey into the lesser-known Sicily, far from the frenetic routes of mass tourism and magically immersed among ancient stone villages, rock castles, and vibrant folk traditions. This intimate spirit is behind the “Weekend of the Heart,” an initiative promoted by the cultural association “Il Manto di Kore” to showcase the wonders of the island’s hinterland through a model of slow, mindful, and sustainable tourism. This eagerly awaited event, which enjoys the prestigious patronage of the participating municipalities, will take place from May 29th to 31st, taking travelers on an unforgettable journey that embraces the evocative landscapes of the Madonie, Erei, and Nebrodi mountains.
The journey unfolds through destinations of rare beauty, steeped in history and a proud local identity. We’ll explore Sperlinga, renowned for its majestic castle carved entirely out of sandstone rock and its pristine forest, considered one of the last and most precious remnants of ancient forest on the island. The journey will then continue to Gangi, proudly proclaimed “Borgo dei Borghi” (Borgo of Villages) in 2014, enchanting visitors with its intact medieval layout, a maze of alleys, ancient churches, and breathtaking panoramic views that evoke centuries of Sicilian history. Finally, the itinerary will touch Nicosia, the noble “City of the 24 Barons.” Deeply connected to the imposing historical figures of Frederick II and Charles V, Nicosia has now returned to the center of cultural attention, thanks in part to some recent and successful television productions.
The experience will not be limited to a simple exploration of the landscapes, but will become a true immersion in the cultural fabric of the region. Alongside guided tours, meticulously curated by guides who are the true custodians of the memories of these places, the program is enriched with unmissable events closely tied to Sicilian roots. Among these are a captivating theatrical performance, performed strictly in the ancient Gallo-Italic dialect of Sperlinghese, and a captivating folk music show performed by maestro Filippo Paternò from Gangi. This opportunity is made even more inviting by the fact that participation in these cultural events is completely free, leaving visitors to cover only the logistical costs of entrance to the monumental sites, meals, and overnight stays.
