White sand and blue sea for a magnificent beach suitable for children
Very fine white sand and a crystal-clear sea that enchants at first glance. When you think of the best Sicilian beaches, you can’t help but think of San Vito Lo Capo. The town in the province of Trapani is famous for its sea, its events and also for its delicacies, among which couscous stands out.
The main beach of San Vito Lo Capo is that of the town. Its white sand makes the color of the sea so light blue that it is impossible to resist a dive. The frame of the white houses, the lighthouse that can be seen in the distance, the Monte Monaco that rises behind, make the beach an authentic jewel.
The beach is child-friendly, as certified by the Green Flag, a recognition created in 2008 which is awarded to the best beaches for parents on holiday with young children. Among the requirements necessary to obtain the Green Flag are: a sandy beach; the water that does not immediately become high in order to make it safe for the little ones; the presence of assistance; areas and equipment dedicated to children but also the possibility of having fun for the parents too. The beach of San Vito Lo Capo has managed to obtain this recognition for 15 consecutive years.
For a few years, thanks to the commitment of the Aquatic Training Center and its “Zero Barriers” project, access has been created along the beach of San Vito Lo Capo for people with different motor abilities. Qualified staff help users with every need and there are wheelchairs suitable for easy access to the water.
The transparent water is ideal for those who want to snorkel or for those who prefer scuba diving. On the seafront there are also sports areas where you can train, dedicated to those who do not want to stop practicing sports even on vacation.
One of the many events organized in San Vito Lo Capo is dedicated precisely to sport, the Outdoor Fest, which is held in October and includes the Climbing Festival, with climbing events that are organized on Monte Monaco and Monte Cofano, with their fantastic view of the Mediterranean. During the event, in addition to climbing, you can practice any outdoor sport, including Mountain biking, Sup, Kayaking, Windsurfing, Slack Line and Kite Surfing.
The beach also hosts another event that attracts many children, the Kite Festival, which is held in spring, usually at the end of May. The sky is colored thanks to the exciting flight of hundreds of kites of every color and size, to the delight of the little ones and not only.
San Vito Lo Capo attracts thousands of tourists to its beach every year. For those looking for quieter places, there are several coves around the village and in its hamlets. Among the most beautiful are those of the Gulf of Macari, which have become famous in recent years for the Rai TV series. There are three small beaches, one more beautiful than the other. The best known is Cala Bue Marino, elected by Legambiente in 2016 as “The most beautiful is you”, which awards the 20 most beautiful beaches in Italy. The Isolidda Beach, with its pebbles, offers a fantastic view of Monte Cofano. Equally magnificent is the Caletta Rosa.
It is also possible to swim in front of the ancient Tonnara di San Vito Lo Capo, known as Tonnara del Secco, dating back to 1400. It is the ideal place for those who want to snorkeland fish watch thanks to the seabed full of fish. The water is immediately high, so it is a beach not suitable for children.
For those who don’t really like sand there is also the Billeci Beach. This stretch is easily reachable on foot from the town and access to the sea has been obtained from the small port.
Obviously, the sea and the splendid beaches are not the only attraction of San Vito Lo Capo: for years the name of the town has been linked to a traditional dish and its various variations: couscous. The fish one is exceptional, typical Sicilian, prepared with freshly caught fish. The most important event in San Vito Lo Capo, held every year in September, is dedicated to couscous: the Cous Cous Fest.
