Gibellina is the first city to be “Italian capital of contemporary art”, winner of the Portami il futuro project, which saw the participation of 23 cities, including Carrara, Gallarate, Pescara and Todi. The title “Italian capital of contemporary art” was introduced this year by the Ministry of Culture and the winner will receive one million euros funded by the Ministry of Culture.

«I express deep satisfaction for the proclamation of Gibellina as Italian capital of contemporary art 2026. This recognition celebrates a city that is a symbol of cultural and architectural rebirth, a place that, from the tragedy of the earthquake, has been able to rise again as an international point of reference for contemporary art and creative innovation. The choice of the Trapani town underlines not only the historical and cultural importance of this Sicilian municipality, but also the incredible contribution of our region to the national artistic panorama». This was stated by the President of the Sicilian Region Renato Schifani, commenting on the choice of the Ministry of Culture. «The designation – he continues – represents an extraordinary opportunity to support new projects and to further grow the artistic and cultural identity of the Municipality. As already happened with Agrigento, which will be the Italian Capital of Culture next year, we will work to ensure that Gibellina, beyond the state contribution, can also count on additional financial resources that give impetus to initiatives that enhance the territory and promote contemporary art in all its forms. This is a success for all of Sicily, which confirms its position as a land of culture and creativity. I thank the Ministry of Culture, the jury chaired by Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, and all those who supported this path. Sicily will be a proud protagonist of the Italian artistic panorama in 2026, offering a testimony of how beauty and culture can be engines of development and social cohesion». “It is with deep pride – adds the Councilor for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity Francesco Paolo Scarpinato – that I express my applause for the proclamation of Gibellina as the Italian Capital of Contemporary Art for 2026. After Agrigento, the Italian Capital of Cultural Heritage, Sicily obtains a new and prestigious recognition. A tangible sign of the extraordinary cultural wealth of the Island, which represents an open-air treasure chest where ethnic groups and traditions blend and coexist in an unrepeatable uniqueness. This designation is also a sign that we are working in the right direction, in the name of protection, enhancement and correct use of our artistic and cultural heritage”.
